Telamadera Fusion

Where: My home studio, San Rafael.
Lunch and all supplies are included.
$150.-

Join me in making a 12 x 12 inch work of art using fabric and paint on wood, in time for the holidays! We will play with dimensional paint and wood burning tools. Many designs are available or create your own!

The Telamadera Fusion process requires 7 coats of a non-toxic, polymer based varnish. You will have time to complete the first coat in class and I will give you instruction and varnish to complete your piece at home.

Time did not stand still
but leaned longer into
the moment, long enough
to drench my skin. Yes,
I said, to glowing golden.

The shadows had no choice
but to move farther
in the low, warm light,
they reached, but I was
no longer beholden.

Like driftwood on a current
I swam with the wind,
along a sunset stream,
up and over the moon I was,
when picked up and loved.
In short, I was astounded.

"She's a beauty," I hear her say.
Light's journey from high
to deep inside dissolves
me in the rough edged pages
of a singular season's story
and her bounty of harvest hues.

This chapter is undone.
I'm still and in the moment,
grateful for time travel
in my veins. This
amber leaf is pressed
in the space between
the heavens,
forever cherished
and glad I said yes.

Three Little Birds,
outside my doorstep,
sang me a melody pure,
upon their visit,
gracing me
with sweet presence,
flying in on footsteps
to climb a staircase
toward Heaven's
intentions,
for a family needing
healing understanding.
Together they opened
a door to a single cage
in my Redwood cathedral
where the littlest bird's
words flew deep and wide
over this canopy
of Pure Life, she said
"We don't pick our family,
but if I could, I'd pick
the two of you again,"
The forest roots
heard, reached for each
other with tender care
through the veil,
while love and wisdom
flew on wings
rightly,
from my doorstep.

Telamadera Fusion Workshop- Sat., Sept. 11, 2010

Create your own Telamadera Fusion ™ Artwork in this one-day workshop. Join, artist Alma de la Melena Cox as she shares her process for bringing wood, paint and fabric together in a brilliant way. Several designs will be available to choose from or you are welcome to bring your own to create a 12’’ x 12’’ piece. You will have fun with beautiful fabrics, wood-burning and dimensional paint for embellishment. The elements of art will be discussed such as color, contrast, composition and design. Several examples will be provided. The Telamadera process requires 7 coats of varnish. In class you will apply the first coat and will be given instruction and varnish to finish the piece at home. All supplies and lunch are included.

Loving San Rafael!

It has been two weeks since our move to California, and although we have not unpacked all the boxes, we are settling in to our new home in downtown San Rafael. The kids are playing sports and they start school next week. We have enjoyed the sights in Sausalito and San Francisco, have loved exploring the local beauty on trails and tasting the diverse food that abounds.

Regrettably we were not able to say goodbye to many wonderful people in Sisters and Bend- as many of you know, Mike made five and I made four trips to CA in five weeks and the days quickly went by, filled with moving, classes to teach and last minute details. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for our friends in Oregon and will cherish the ten years we spent there- they were magical!

Now that the dust has settled, I am working on some new things....

First, a Telamadera Fusion workshop in my San Rafael home, September 11th, 2010 from 9AM to 5PM. Please email me at alma@almaart.com for details.

Moon reached her beams across my bed,
milky slivers glowed my gown, a restless
invitation to walk through the treetop’s gate,
a summer’s breeze held the key, lifting me,
she said, “I know the waiting isn’t easy.”

Moon was full of light years of perspective,
all that brightness in so much darkness,
you know she works the tides?
That hole we’ve blown on ocean’s floor,
we hide no more, “Centuries,” she says,
“even healing has her season.”

Moon looks over, my head hangs low,
patiently she waits for my little needs
arrogance breeds to control how, when
and even still she gives the sea her soul,
fills my son’s moat along the shore.
I say, “The worst of it is, I’m here for me.”

Moon’s chalky fingers brush and fill in
my ache to please, to get it right,
"Rest now," I hear as she draws a blanket
of clouds near, leaves her nightlight within me.

Here are two stories for you that I wrote after a trip we took to Europe this past summer. I thought to share them as their message helped me find some clarity this morning. Have a great day!

LIVING LOUD © By Alma de la Melena Cox

Hectic schedules with my two middle schoolers and a full-time art career
combined with the sun deprivation I feel during our long winters in a very small town in dry, Central
Oregon, all make me, a California girl, enormously GRATEFUL when we go anywhere
there is sun and a little moisture in the air.

While the words, “We need a vacation,” still linger in the air, my husband
and I run to our Mac and before Expedia loads, we are thinking,
let’s book this thing RIGHT NOW before the money goes to the HOGS.
You know, the Have to’s, Ought to’s, Got to’s and Shoulds in life, the inner adult that likes to
rain on my inner child’s parade. From the get go our last trip was different than our
usual instant gratiﬁcation trip to Mexico or a last minute Hawaii trip we justify by staying
with friends. The seed of our seven week Europe trip this summer was planted a few
years ago and it grew in delicious proportion to our visualizing what it would be. I
imagined time standing still on trains, relishing moments with my family, deciding as we
went along, where our next stop might be. I saw our faces pressed against windows,
awed by medieval castles perched high on hilltops and swooning to lyrical languages
dancing in our ears. All the conversations, debates about where to go, what our route
would be, to book hotels or to wing it, in hindsight, was really that this trip had the
promise of a unique direction and it had decided before I had a chance to see- that it
was wanting to be more so it could teach me something about BEING MORE.

On June 29th, 2009 our much anticipated ﬂight took off to Madrid. We spent two weeks
traveling around many cities in Spain before spending three weeks in Barcelona. Our
last two weeks were spent in Italy- ﬁrst Venice, then to the Tuscany region and ﬁnally
Cinque Terra. How we came to decide on these two cultures is probably stuff for
another story. I will say I don’t believe in accidents and knowing that our beloved Bruce
Springsteen was playing in Benidorm on the Mediterranean in Spain on our 17th
wedding anniversary was, to us, a sign that we had to be in Spain. And Italy? Well, can
one really be so close and NOT go to Italy? It seemed ﬁtting and markers along the
planning path directed us and set the tone for a trip that decided to take place in two
cultures that LIVE LOUD- just to make sure I was listening.

From the moment we landed, passion fueled an underlying narrative impossible
to ignore- from dramatic displays of ardor between lovers as we squeezed tight in
hot subways, to the volume people spoke with. Buildings told stories, I could
hear them, of artists whose greatness was measured by the span of their vision.
Ardent bedsprings in our hotel hallways made me think that during the quiet
‘siesta’ hours when businesses closed in Spain, this entire nation was
responsible for raising the degrees outside under blankets of heat. No wonder
people spilled into streets hungrily at 8pm, in line like ants, one Tapas bar to
another, all night long. It wasn’t just the fervent displays of amore, the food and
the entire food ritual kept up the seduction. Even my daughter who dislikes pesto
so much, in Italy ordered primi after primi of pasta al pesto because, as she said,
“Mommy it is just SO DIFFERENT here!” In case the message wasn’t reaching
me, the Universe was now channelling my 13 year old. I’m really not
overdoing! It seemed even the books I read had been dispatched by ‘something
greater,’ into my hands, to amplify the zest- Julie and Julia, by Julie Powell, Brida
by Paolo Coelho and the Red Tent by Anita Diamant. Funny, I hadn’t
remembered The Red Tent being THAT kind of a book 5 years ago, but in Spain
it was- page after page after page….well, you get the idea.

In Italy, hands danced in time to words, and no accident that women continually
brought their hands to their chests so that I could glimpse waiters hovering longer
over their wine glasses- it was an invitation, don’t you see? But I digress, it
wasn’t all sexuality, but yes, sensuality and the beaches in Barcelona
opened my eyes so I could know. It wasn’t the nudity, but the confidence
women of every shape, size, color and age exuded, comfy and content in their
skin. People were dialed-in- you know?

Heaven sent gelato and luscious lobster punctuated the five colorful villages of
Cinque Terra. I heard that farmers carved the terraces there with their hands and
shovels to grow grapes and olives. “Well, of course!” I said out loud. One MUST
teeter on cliffs, on the edge, unafraid to make exquisite wine and sumptuous
oil. From afar the farmer’s voices came close and whispered, “To what extent will
YOU go to make your dreams happen?” “How will you bring more pleasure to
your life?”

Artwork left me silent but filled me with color and beauty and in tears I
promised Picasso to take my art further and like the buildings, I heard him
emphasize, “We paved the way for more greatness.” Fields of Sunflowers
against vivid blue skies in Tuscany, their smiling faces happily yelling “YELLOW!”
as we drove by them so I would not forget to use the color of the sun more.
All of it pointed to taking my life to a juicier level, to speak and create and do
with more ardor! I put my children’s mortification aside and I went topless in
Barcelona and something gave way….the sea breeze on my skin whispered
FEEL, ENJOY, LOVE…..more.

Life was doing what it does best. It was being abundant and it had my rapt
attention. In so loving what I saw, it expanded the possibilities of what I could
bring to my life. It handed me a gift, like it gives everyone every second we
breathe, every moment we share, everyday that we see beauty or love. In
paying attention and being grateful for it, it expanded my own life and generously
pushed me to see life through my soul’s eyes, to fill myself up with the wonder of
every moment so that I could be more of who I really am.

To “live loud” had been my promise to myself as I returned home from a seven
week trip to Spain and Italy this past summer, filled with my best intentions to
bring more gusto into my everyday. Life has its own itinerary however, and as
resolute as my journal entries had been on the plane back to 1. Dream bigger, 2.
Get organized so dreams have space to happen and 3. Believe that they can,
along with other, more developed points, I got home and sunk into a funk I could
not shake. I hit the ground running with deadlines to meet and I kept telling
myself that I would soon be ‘feeling’ again, the enthusiasm from Cinque Terra
quickly becoming a memory. I suspected my soul was still playing in Venice.
Hadn’t I called it “Disneyland for adults?”

Thinking my soul had gone (Ah, perception!), the dark hole that remained was to
teach me something more about her friend, life. Life is really good about hitting
low when your up so high, say like, from a trip of a lifetime. I’m recalling some
Eastern philosophy pearl I read once, something like, to the extent that we have
joy we also have pain. Wisdom is so irritatingly crystal clear in hindsight. I’ll just
give you the events as they transpired.

Ego was stealthy. It was ‘in the house’ and perpetuating guilt, telling me I didn’t
deserve so much good, that it is just not possible to have so much and to want
more. Because that’s what Spain and Italy did- they made me hungry for
more. Under the quiet guise of a well planned trip that took three years to put
together, ‘responsibly created,’ with few credit card charges, life generously gave
me more than I could ask for so I could then learn how to ‘handle it.’ More good
awaited at home with artistic opportunity and my lack of enthusiasm now
screamed, spoiled! I took the bait. Two weeks passed and I tried daily to
appreciate my life, but could not. I dared not share this with anyone for fear that I
would be judged as an ingrate. No matter, guilt was my judge and old habits of
being hard on myself took hold. I posted photos to my blog hoping that the sweet
energy people usually offer me would pull me up and out. Even my husband,
who is my #1 FAN could not, would not give me the time to feel sorry for myself.
Why should he hear “I just feel bad I can’t get excited about anything,” on the
heels of a soul soaring adventure that dripped in pleasure and passion, for crying
out loud! There it is again….LOUD- and we’ve come full circle.

Life brings you up against yourself, you know? The passion could not speak with
the choke hold of guilt, born of poor programming, childhood messages, self-
inflicted doubt and judgement. Flailing in darkness, it is impossible to see the
why or how guilt spawns. It doesn’t even matter because tracing it to it’s
beginnings will leave you blaming, hating and really sad. In doing your best to
‘grow’ and ‘evolve’ guilt mutates, like a virus and rears it’s ugly head when your
guard is down. It manifests in new warped ways- better to stay quiet about your
joy lest your friends think you’re bragging, feeling the need to minimize how great
life is because it doesn’t seem right to be so happy when there is just so much
pain in the world. Or the big one- that it is all just too good to be true and holding
on to fear that at any moment it can be taken away.

Life is full of contradictions that can’t live without each other and ironically, we
wouldn’t have it any other way, beauty and ugly, dark and light, love and fear.
When my children were born I was at once filled with abounding love and soul
gripping terror too, that their fragile lives could be taken away from me. That is
our life package deal and to have that kind of love, we must boldly hold it up in
the face of fear.

The villain’s grip tightened and I cried big bucket tears that blamed me, (here we
go again), for my weakness. Shame and disgust (can I seriously move on?)
moved in for a second attack, but not before ‘the victim’ hit me low, where it really
hurts. Thoughts like… nobody has died here for goodness sakes, your life is a
life of privilege, just get over yourself already……why do we do this to our sweet
selves? And if there is a shred of compassion in the question, then life, with all
her contradictions, hands you her grace card and it shines a sliver of light under
the door that guides you in darkness, toward it. It takes courage to turn the knob,
a decision, a new perception, and I suddenly realize Sheroe (for my soul is
courageous), was never gone. Indeed, she was with me all along! I did what I
could not seem to do in the past, throwing open the door, I summoned bright,
shining, love light for myself at 7, and 10, and 18 and now at 41. I held us close
and whispered, “We’ve been running scared too long.” The little girl me, the
young woman me and me now, decided together that we deserve so much more
than we’ve been programmed to believe, and this filled us, in a new way, with my
promise of color and beauty. “Give! Share!” my tears sang. “With pleasure and
passion!” I answered back and they baptized me in the waters of clarity and
wisdom. Turns out, living is all about giving.

In the peaceful, raw quiet that follows, the lessons continue and there is always
more forgiving. I walk into the forest and press my heart to the earth, I give
thanks and feel the women of my tribe, my past and my present, breathe out the
burden of our collective unworthiness.
I restate my promise to live loud.
“Love Loud.” I say.
“You shouldn’t want so much,” says my old expectation.
I hear the breeze from the sea in Venice travel through the trees and
my soul,
she is with me
once more.

of guilt and regret.

What's it all for?

clouding the surface.

Light catches my eye
a breeze, and my breath.
Some space, but too soon
there's cry in my chest.

Shoulds and woulds
what ifs and hows.
Breath gets louder
and the moment called Now

flies by, she's a bird.
Breeze, breath and blue.
It all seems absurd
when everything true

is now, not later
not before or even soon.
I catch her wing,
so grateful. There's room

in this moment,
Space. Deep and wide.
Holy and grace,
not words. No mind.

The gift in the window
comes without expectation.
No planning or wishing
just soaring elation.

The hills laugh in color.
Flowers dance in delight,
blooming for beauty,

My new book, Collage Fusion: Vibrant Wood and Fabric Art Using Telamadera Techniques will be on sale there, as well as artwork from the book. I am very excited as the Stitchin' Post is my all-time favorite fabric store- it not only has incredibly beautiful fabrics but it is so inspiring to be in there surrounded by gorgeous quilts and a wonderful display. I hope to see you there!

I'm off to California to the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) Convention in Anaheim where I will be demonstrating a couple projects from my new book and no doubt meeting many fun and 'artsy' souls. I'm visualizing myself poolside, under a Palm Tree, for some portion of my three days there.....but I'm especially excited to see Martha Beck, who will be the Keynote Speaker. She is a regular contributor to O, the Oprah Magazine and the author of "Finding Your Own North Star," and "Steering by Starlight." I loved this second book and intend on having her sign my copy- I'll keep you posted if I actually get to MEET the woman (I'm visualizing that too) :).

I am really excited to have partnered up with Jean Wells in a beautiful exhibition at the Latimer Quilt and Textile Museum in Tillamook, Oregon. Give yourself or someone special the gift of creating artwork. My next Telamadera Fusion Workshop is Saturday, Jan. 9th, 2010 from 9am to 5pm in my home studio in Sisters, Oregon.

Bring fabric, paint and wood together to create a luminous Telamadera Fusion Artwork- this process requires 7-10 coats of a polymer based varnish. The class takes you through the first coat and I'll give you the tools necessary to complete the piece at home. We will use a wood burning tool and the elements of design, such as color, composition and contrast will be will be discussed. All levels are welcome!

International Quilt Show, Houston
Hi all!
The International Quilt Show in Houston was amazing and quite an eye-opener. There are so many incredibly talented quilt artists out there- I was captivated by many quilts and thought the SAQA Exhibit to be just stunning. I had the opportunity to teach at Make It University! (photos) and to demonstrate my work at Open Studios, both through Quilting Arts. There were a total of 50 participants in my classes and we made the Pendart Ⓒ Jewelry which is a very mini version of my Telamadera Fusion process. I really love seeing how everyone takes off in my classes, creating artwork that is so uniquely their own. This project is one of 30 ideas in my new book, Collage Fusion: Wood and Fabric Art Using Telamadera Techniques.....and yes! It is almost here!

Painting
Although the recent teaching and travel I've been doing has been enormously rewarding, I have been itching to get into my studio and yesterday was the day. Here's what's brewing.....

Sometimes a title comes with an idea and the word that came with this piece is "Tethered." A figure is in a body of water and she is 'tethered' by tendrils off a Lotus. There is more it will tell me I'm sure.

Art and Soul Retreat in Portland was Awesome!

Look at all this wonderful creativity going on! I am SO VERY IMPRESSED with everyone's BEAUTIFUL Telamadera Fusion creations! I was so happy to teach at Art and Soul in Portland. Everyone in class had such positive energy and enthusiasm. I appreciated the kind gifts of fabric and coupon too! I was infused with such good energy that I had intended to spend one more night in Portland afterwards because I figured I would be exhausted, but instead I decided to drive the three hours home because I was buzzing from the fun. Here you can see some pics from class- we are huddled under a small overhang just outside the hotel, woodburning away. Everone was really great about going with the flow. Even though we weren't allowed to burn inside, the hotel was GREAT in setting us up outside and no one said anything about the cold- which it was!

Glenny runs a really great event and I encourage everyone to check out an Art & Soul Retreat sometime- so many awesome classes taught by some very talented people. I felt privileged to be there and grateful for the people in my class who made it fun and a memorable first Art and Soul for me! Thank you!

Quilting Arts TV

I remember getting my first issue of Quilting Arts Magazine as I began my artistic journey seven years ago. I was amazed at the beautiful artwork and the way the magazine was laid out. It spoke to my soul as each page I turned showed glorious color and wonderful layers of fabrics and embellishments. At the time I remember thinking I would love to meet Pokey Bolton, the editor and creator of Quilting Arts, because of her vision. She followed up with another incredible publication, Cloth, Paper, Scissors, and this seemed to parallel the changes that were taking place in my artwork as I began to mix up the media I used. The artists featured always inspired me, and still do, to push into new territory. I always read the Editor's Note at the beginning of the magazines and have enjoyed seeing how the magazines have grown. As I headed to Cleveland, Ohio to tape a segment for Quilting Arts TV , I was excited to meet Pokey, this person who had created meaningful touchstones on my artistic path. I marvelled at how incredible life is, bringing opportunities that link us to things we love- and in my case- FIBER ART!

I loved every minute of the Quilting Arts TV experience! Getting to meet special people..... Pokey (wonderful, dynamic energy!) and Helen Gregory (generous spirit!), Kathie Stull (skilled producer!), Katherine (thank you! :)), and all the talented artists and people that make the show a reality. I felt privileged to be there and I want to give a special THANK YOU to Dawn at The Warm Company for making it possible for me be on the show. I LOVE their product, Steam A Seam 2.

I included an image of the project I demonstrated which is Telamadera Fusion With An Art Quilt. The show will be on in January sometime so please look for it on PBS and for the DVD on Quiling Arts. TV

Back from Spain and Italy!

Hi All!
Well, our seven week Spain/Italy adventure has come to a close and we are safely home. I feel so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel with my family through some incredibly beautiful places. I took over 2200 photos (insane!) and the ones I am sharing here are ones that I felt had a more artistic bent to them- I hope you enjoy them! Some artistic highlights for me:

A Matisse Exhibit at the Thyssen/Bornemisza in Madrid- I love an artist who plays BOLDLY with color!

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona- I did not know his early works and I was FLOORED by his use of color and space. I especially loved to see his evolution from traditional representation to cubism.

Gaudi's buildings and structures, Barcelona- One word- Genius.

Michelangelo's David- One solid piece of marble-Crazy Cool.

Providing inspiration for a long time to come.....The Alhambra in Granada, Tuscany, Venice and Cinque Terra, old gates, picturesque windows, and clothes hanging in the sun to dry.

Now that I'm back there is much creating to look forward to. I'm excited about events coming up....especially teaching at Art and Soul Retreat in Portland at the end of September. In a couple of weeks I travel to Ohio to tape a Quilting Arts TV episode where I demonstrate Telamadera Fusion with Quilts. I'll keep everyone posted as to when it airs.

Longevity

I recently created 15 new artworks for a Gallery section of my book (due out in November!) and during the process of creating them I joked with my family and friends that if they stood still long enough, they would end up as inspiration for one of these 15 pieces. I had already created 30 works for the book and these 15 were added when I thought I was already finished. Those first few days of coming up with new ideas had me worried because I wanted them to be fresh and new and nothing seemed to be coming to me......until......my friend Julie stood still at Yoga long enough for me to get inspired :). She even went so far as to MOVE ME, so I dedicated this little piece to her, titled Longevity.

On a recent and much deserved vacation in Hawaii, Julie returned with a beautiful new tattoo of a turtle on her back, just below her shoulder. As I admired it she told me how she picked the turtle. She turned to me and said, "The turtle is a symbol for longevity." She paused and added, "That means a lot to me because of my diabetes and my kids." Julie has four beautiful children, including twin three year olds and she is an amazing mother to them all and it really moved me that she would place this permanent symbol on her body as a totem for a long life well lived with those she loves most.

This is a commissioned artwork I made a few years ago and I'm posting it because I had an experience with a duck and her babies yesterday, and I thought it would be appropriate. As I drove around the corner of a busy intersection I stopped behind a long line of cars that waited for a mother duck to cross the road with her six babies. Two nice women tried to direct the mother duck but she looked frantic, trying unsuccessfully to get up onto the sidewalk with her six babies under her. I got out of the car with a sleeping bag thinking, I don't know, could we maybe get them onto the sleeping bag and move them? The mother duck was truly distraught, opening and closing her bill, making no sound as her babies scurried under her and between her feet- squeaking? Loudly. We stood there frozen, not one of us willing to distress her further by attempting to pick her up and separate her from her chicks. I was talking to her, seriously, mother to mother, "I have babies too, I know." What struck me was that she didn't fly, she never made a move away from her babies and they moved in perfect timing with her, all six of them, one unit, under her. Time stood still, not a single car of about twenty attempted to pass, not one horn or angry voice. We all just waited and watched the little group move sideways a foot, back the other way, another, without a particular direction. When time stands still you have no sense of it, so I couldn't tell you how long we stood there. I wonder now, how long could we have stood there, cars waiting in a line stopped in both directions? I suppose we would have all waited as long as was necessary for that mother duck to find her way. Mother Nature, as she does, and in her own perfect timing, seemed to step in because all the sideways moving suddenly stopped. The mother duck seemed to get taller and she turned her head (as if listening?). She focused on some tall grass on the other side of the road and in an about face she turned all six babies, still under her and proceeded to cross three lanes with purpose and intention. Without a sideways glance or hesitation, she found the place in the sidewalk flush with the pavement so her chicks could easily maneuver onto it, across it and finally, into the grass. Watching her before making her move, you would have thought she'd had a momentary loss of memory, frantically pacing and suddenly- like a bolt of lightning- remembering, Oh of course! That tall grass there, THAT'S HOME! The two women and I stared at each other and one said, "Well, ok." And it always is, isn't it? Grace steps in and makes things better than they were. I cried all the way to the grocery store, grateful for the reminder.

Libra was born this week in a wonderful class by Marion Shimoda called Whimsical Wired Characters. Marion taught the class at the Stitchin' Post and it was great to see each of us create such unique characters.

Libra definetely has some warrior/Incan priestess thing going on, balancing between peace and love- smart girl. She reminds me to direct my power in meaningful ways. Thank you Marion!

Walking Toward Her Wisdom

I lost weight last night.
PLEASINGOTHERS had corked the sweet nectar hidden inside.
I was bathed in the sweet waters of Divine and I emerged thinner.
Rebecca calls it having "some cry inside" and it had been wanting to come out.
It opened a door to a land where bare, full, rounded bottoms and naked capfuls of breasts pulsed to PersonPeople as the flowers grew from the tips of our hair.
We danced around the Lotus Pond of New Birth, each blossom opening so that we could sit inside, shutting our eyes for an afternoon nap as the petals enfolded us.
Noon became Night as Mother Moon beamed her fullness.
She called us up, each one, to be given our name.
"Authentica" she whispered,
"Walk toward your wisdom now."
And I took the path that was only ever right,
My own.

Patchwork and Pacifiers

I had three special guests in my home this past Sunday- Jennifer Ruvalcaba, her beautiful daughter Flora and her sweet aunt Aprile. Jennifer has a very fun and informative Podcast site called Patchwork and Pacifiers and I was very fortunate to have her interview me on Sunday. I am amazed by Jennifer- she has a SWEET nine month old named Flora and she has created this wonderful venue to listen to interviews and share quilting information which means she is on the road gathering information to bring to her listeners. I love how she has taken her passion for quilting, writing and her great interviewing skills and merged them beautifully. Please check out Jennifer's site at www.patchworkandpacifiers.wordpress.com. I also had the opportunity to meet her aunt Aprile, who had taken one of my online classes before, so it was a real pleasure to meet her in person. REEL IT IN!

After WEEKS of fiddling with this piece titled, "Abundance," it finally had its way (so petulant!) and became what you see here. I have to admit it holds a special place in my heart, as it taught me a lesson that I've been butting up against lately. To begin, I initially thought of having the girl looking down at the big fish she was catching, but I couldn't get her to not look like she was falling off the edge of the cliff and looking like she might be the intended bait. Insisting on looking up, she had her way, but it didn't make sense to me that she'd be looking up at the sun (there was a sun there initially too)- so the background had to be reworked into a night sky? What was that all about? So once the moon was in, the stars had to follow. Mind you, the whole time, I'm fretting about this new change, actually having ANXIETY about it, which is really not the most ideal 'art making state' to be in. Anyway, to make a long story longer, I really liked the way the rocks had turned out since I had created those first and I was putting my foot down about keeping them bright. I'M the artist, right? So, I thought it was coming together, but something wasn't right. I'll explain. I've made lots of different images- landscapes, stlll lifes, fun work without heavy meaning, but most of the artwork I make does have a level of personal meaning to me that I'm usually aware of as I create it. If I don't initially, it begins to point me toward something more as it is evolving. This image came to me as I thought on 'abundance.' The imagery seemed pretty direct to me, but it threw me for a loop because it had more to say than I could understand, even after I had put 6 coats of varnish on it. It was in the photographing of it that it hit me. No joke, it took me TWO HOURS to get this photograph, and I think it still needs work (just to add to the metaphor I'm getting to. Stay with me.) The truth wasn't easy to see and I know how truth works- there will be more to come! Here's what I have so far....

I'm piled high on the gifts this Universe generously gives me. Abundance is already mine and she's on the line. I'm wishing or PLEADING on that star (and the moon, and the whole Universe!), UNAWARE of the 'GREAT BIG GOOD' all around and WITHIN. 'Wise One,' was trying to get my attention with all my anxiety but I would not hear it- they are whispers after all. Sometimes I just need a good SHOUT to hear it- ALL IS WELL! REEL IT IN! ENJOY IT!

So why so much anxiety? Well, I LIKE TO THINK I appreciate the good things in my life, I certainly SAY I do. The truth.....because I've briefly touched on this elusive wonder- true abundance as I've seen it, is a state of FULLNESS, of KNOWING, of GRACE, of ACCEPTANCE and of DEEP GRATEFULNESS for everything JUST AS IT IS......and the truth is- I'm seeing what I don't want and not seeing what I do.

Allrighty then. I got it, but this time I'm not going to give myself a hard time for not getting it. I AM the artist after all :).

Inspiration in San Miguel de Allende

My family and I recently spent two weeks in San Miguel de Allende, a Spanish Colonial city in central Mexico, about 6500 feet above sea level. Every building was a glorious color and I loved that the chipping paint revealed a history of past colors that offered more contrast to delight my eyes. The main plaza had an incredible cathedral. Bouganvillea in an array of colors abounded on walls everywhere and open doors revealed inner corridors of multiple arches, beautiful gardens, fountains or narrow passageways with bouganvillea growing on either side. I'll have more photos to post soon, I just wanted to get a few up for you to enjoy.

I have traveled extensively throughout Mexico, visiting lots of beach towns, large and small, where many tourists frequent. I have also lived in bustling Mexico City. I have been to lots of small towns where the pace of life is considerably slower than the US, but most of these are in rural places- charming and picturesque indeed, but a much simpler lifestyle. In San Miguel I was struck by how many people, Mexican and foreigners alike call it home. It is richly steeped in history and culture, complete with narrow cobblestone streets, but has the modern conveniences I appreciate. Although it is relatively small (about 70,000 people), it is nestled high in the Eastern Sierra Madre Mountain Range, virtually alone, with the nearest larger cities at least an hour away from it. There is a lot of space around San Miguel, but that doesn't seem to make people spread out. It seems everyone enjoys living in very close proximity to one another, sharing common walls- there is a palpable energy and buzz and I attribute this to how happy the inhabitants are. San Miguel has a vibrant art scene, wonderful restaurants and shops that entice walkers with their colorful and artistic goods. How is it then, with so much energy that abounds, with so many Americans and Canadians that live there, with so many people living shoulder to shoulder, that it maintains that same pace of life typical of the pueblos that dot the Mexican landscape? I believe that people that choose to live in San Miguel find that this is its most precious gift and everyone actively pursues the art of living in the moment. From the moment we arrrived, my husband and I were immediately enveloped in the calm and serenity that is thick in the air. We 'unplugged' almost instantly. This is true of the many beach towns along the Mexican coast- give me some sand, a Corona and 90 degrees, and I 'unplug' pretty easily. What made this trip unique is that all my senses were engaged, I saw incredible art, amazing architecture, I smelled the fruits and vegetables of the Mercado, I met interesting people from all over the world, I put in many miles of walking daily and yet I was as relaxed and rejuvenated as any resort experience with the added bonus of feeling completely inspired to come home and infuse my artwork with what I had taken in. I guess you could say I had a really great time in San Miguel :) and it is high on my list of places to visit!

"Secret Garden"

New Work! This image came to me in the minutes just before waking. You know that wonderful place just before the day's to do's sneak in the back door of your delicious dreams and start their noise. I've had Bruce Springsteen's song by the same name (an oldie but a greaty!) circulating in my mind for a couple of weeks, so I can't help but think his inspiring words helped create this image. To me it speaks about the mystery of who we are, our deeply kept dreams that are held in our heart. We aren't always aware of what our soul desires, but the sweetness of this life is uncovering the potential within us and believing that anything is possible.

Other news!

Lots of exciting things going on.....I was really happy to see that my Reclaiming Yin Stamp was featured in the new Take Ten magazine for Spring.

I'm elated to have the opportunity to be on TV again for the show, Quilting Arts TV! I will be representing the Warm Company (makers of my beloved Steam A Seam 2!) and taping begins at the end of September.

My trip to the International Quilt Show in Houston in October is coming together. In addition to being a part of Open Studios for Interweave (Quilting Arts and Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazines), I am working on teaching a two day workshop at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) just juried me in as a Professional Artist Member. This is very exciting for me as I will have the opportunity to exhibit my work through amazing venues throughout the world.

"Spring Bounty"

New Artwork! Although it snowed in Sisters yesterday, and the wind is howling today, the sun IS shining and I begin to see little shoots of bulbs pushing through the earth all around town. "Spring Bounty" reflects my mood these days....happy and grateful for the bounty of beauty that surrounds me. Last night we hosted a slumber party where eight, 12 and 13 year old young ladies gathered to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Every one of them in braces, bursting with energy and laughter (all night), they spent hours straightening (if they were curly haired) or curling and crimping (if they weren't) their locks.

They are each like the new bulb shoots I see having spent their childhood wintering in the fertile earth of their imagination. Their new growth breaks the surface, their world expands, their teenage years ahead. There will be wind and snow, strong elements to contend with, but with love and nurturing, they will blossom beautifully. The world will be made better by this new bounty, coloring our world, one glorious soul at a time.

Please watch Elizabeth Gilbert's inspired talk by clicking on the TED website to the right of this entry. Her talk moved me as she spoke about our creativity being "on loan" for us to enjoy (and appreciate!). Some call it their Muse, others, Divine Inspiration (or intervention :)), but if we have ever experienced an idea so strongly or felt bliss in the process of creating, then we have been touched by a force greater than ourselves. It is both powerful and humbling. To know we have this access calls us to higher ground where we show up to allow creativity to flow through us. Taking responsibilty for inspired ideas, without excuses, fears or procrastination has been and IS my work. The more I realize the amazing gift that is 'on loan' for me to enjoy and share, I can get out of my own way and let magic have its way. I embrace a positive word or reaction to my artwork because I am the vehicle through which it was created and also the vehicle through which the generous words will reach the Source of that inspiration. Just like me, it LOVES to be noticed and when it is, it gives back HUGELY! Every kindness, every compliment and every gift we share rewards us with love and connection.

Mommy look at us!

Good Morning All!

As the Universe would have it, as soon as I start INTENDING abundance, it serendipitously sends me pointers- life arrows if you will, illuminating a path for me to follow. I could have dismissed the mention of a book from a kind note I received, but thought it might be a 'message from the Universe' (yes, it writes to me), so I followed up. In her book, "Your Heart's Desire," (my favorite of this New Year by the way), Sonia Choquette discusses the Principles of Creativity, and how by applying them, you can create whatever you desire. She says, "There is no favoritism involved and no luck. There is, however, synchronicity and grace. If you follow the natural Principles of Creativity, you will receive these gifts along the way." I know, you've heard it all before, right?....there's Law of Attraction, The Secret, and endless books with endless 'steps' toward creating the life you want, we have ENDLESSLY discussed the topic. I hear Cuba Gooding in my ear yelling, "Show me the Money!" - a collective metaphor for those that feel they aren't receiving their desires fast enough. I've been discussing this with the Universe- yes, we also talk, and this is what it has to say, "SHOW ME THE LOVE!

It is funny that it has taken me so long to see it really, after all, the Universe has been showing me all along with the people in my life. The more I love them unconditionally, the more I receive. It has shown me that when I love myself by exercising and eating well, my health and body love me back. It shows me that when I honor and value my art, more inspired ideas come my way. Seems obvious doesn't it, love and you'll be loved. Then why has it EVER been a challenge to receive what we want? Why are some things more elusive to manifest in our lives than others?

I can't answer that for everyone, but I can tell you that in my life I have spent entirely too much time in my head for my own good, spent way too much time wondering what's going on in the head's of others, and really wasted time worrying what others will think of what's going on in my head. My head has been so heavy, I finally just took the darn thing off and have decided to let my heart steer my body. I've been entirely about me for too long, and not enough about outside of me. Which brings me back to the Universe.....

My friend the Universe, is like a small child. It is on the swing yelling, "Mommy, look at me!" It is not unlike me, in fact it is just like me, it wants to be noticed and GOOD or BAD, whatever you notice about it, it will respond (sound like anybody you know?). Knowing I create my reality has seriously asked me to consider how I spend my thoughts. What I've realized is that the more I spend time 'love thinking' outside myself, the better life gets. Oh, let me define "love thinking"- the act of noticing with your heart. Whether you see the Universe as your friend or not, for better or worse, this relationship is here to stay. See what happens when you show it the love.

International Quilt Festival/Houston- here I come!

I was so happy to hear from Interweave (Cloth, Paper, Scissors and Quilting Arts magazines) to participate in their Open Studios at International Quilt Festival/Houston. Since I started quilitng, it has been a dream for me to go. I see myself in the 'hub' of action while I'm there, blissfully creating in a sea of smiling faces and FABRIC, all happy to be there! There are so many possibilities of what to create. I'll be armed with Fabric, Steam A Seam 2, and an iron. Don't be surprised if the walls look different by the time I leave. Look out Houston- here I come!

Several women shared some personal stories and what it meant to them to support such a worthwhile organization. President Obama has recharged my enthusiasm, lifted my spirit and makes me feel like I want to be a better person! He is a beacon of light in a world in need and I am grateful he is our President! I love how he calls us to serve- that we make a difference by our smallest actions (I'm paraphrasing) in nurturing a child, lending a helping hand, and in essence, BEING "the change we want to see in the world." I'd like to give a SHOUT OUT to Starbucks for their incredible efforts in supporting community service- their staff has contributed 1,000,000 hours to community service and Starbucks has pledged to give us a free cup of coffee for every five hours of service we, as individuals, give to our own communities. The goal is 1,000,000 more hours. Let's get out there people!

Many have the desire to do more, but don't know where to begin. Oftentimes we volunteer at something only to find out that it was not fun at all, or sometimes just plain depressing. What has helped me is identifying a few things about myself that I know are strengths, as well as determining what talents I have that I know will make a contribution. We are not all cut out for volunteering in a hospital, or even working with children and that is OK! I think to be the most effective, we need to be honest with ourselves and the rest of the world in what we are comfortable doing. Many of you have and continue to give money to many areas that need it and that is so valuable. Our time is valuable too, and there are so many places in need that if we could carve out even an hour a month to sharing our abilities with others, slowly but SURELY, the change we want to see in the world, would happen.

So how does one begin? It helped me to ask what I feel impassioned about. I have a soft spot for women who don't feel their own power, who lack confidence or a sense of themselves as being valuable. I began with that and checked out local non-profits over the internet, shelters for at-risk teenage girls, organizations that help protect and counsel women who are in violent situations at home, and a few others. I narrowed my search to a few that moved me. My first reaction to working with at-risk teens was a feeling of intimidation. I'm being honest. I felt that at least right now, that might not be a suitable match for me. The Boys and Girls Club are also always in need of mentors, but again, I had to be honest with my time- with the demands of my own children's busy schedules on weekends, I didn't feel I could commit to being there for another child without sacrificing my time with my own. I found an organization that acts as a safe place for women who have been victims of violence and asked if they might be interested in my sharing what I am able to do. I offered teaching art and/or yoga. Surprisingly one of the branches of this organization offers a Mom's night where they take care of the children of mothers who are going through difficult times while the women spend an evening together, finding comfort in one another's company. I had the privilege of sharing an art class one evening and meeting some wonderful women who are creative and who are so enjoyable to be with. Although their situations are difficult, I admired their willingness to try something new and to make time for themselves. I hope to continue to be involved with this organization. I share my experience in the hopes that if anyone feels they are just not sure about where to begin with community service, that it might help to first ask yourself what you already know and then see if that can be shared somehow. Some people are incredibly patient with children. One woman I met volunteers her time to taking care of the children for free at the Mom's night I described. She has eight children of her own at home and volunteers one night a month. She truly knows the value of 'adult time,' but also loves to be with children. I was in awe of her! One of my best friends has a beautiful voice and she volunteers to sing at our local Hospice. She is an amazing soul who finds it a privilege to sing for individuals who are terminally ill. Although many of the families find solace in the beautiful singing, it is my friend who feels she is receiving the greater gift.

I think in our hearts we know that there are infinite ways we can make a difference. Take a moment to shine the light on yourself. You have been given great gifts. I think it is INCREDIBLE if you are sharing yours, but if you aren't yet, I ask that you hand your beautifully wrapped self to someone so that they may receive the gift that is you too.

New Date for Joggles Class and other Happenings

I hope the date change for my Yin/Yang Box Class via Joggles was not an inconvenience for some of you. Barb at Joggles does a great job of trying to make shopping easier for you by obtaining as many of the supplies you will need in a one stop shop at Joggles. So in an effort to obtain as many supplies as possible she moved the date a bit. I'm happy because several of you have joined the class in the last week or so and this might not have happened had the date stayed put. So, WELCOME those of you who signed up early and those of you still signing up! I'm looking forward to the class!

Other News.....I just returned from Cincinnati where North Light Books photographed the techniques and projects for my book. Julie Hollyday, my Editor, and Christine Polomsky, my Photographer, were amazing during my week there. They were gracious and kind and women I laughed easily with- most importantly! They are part of a very talented team of individuals there at North Light and I feel privileged to be working with them.

I have my Etsy shop up and running again. I'm trying something new by having original artworks for sale. Right now Rose, Daylily and Lotus are highlighted and I am also selling my rubber stamps there and on my website.

I'm dreaming up my next goal- a large scale public installation. McMinnville City Hall is on my radar so I will be submitting a proposal to them in the upcoming weeks. Wish me luck!

Today is Thanksgiving and I am THANKFUL! I am grateful for the enormous amount of LOVE in my life, for HEALTH and for HAPPINESS. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! Take care.

"Loving What Is" and Birthday Wishes

I'm stealing the title of Byron Katie's book for the title of this post as these were the first words that registered as I logged on. In light of the recent celebrating of my birthday, I'm noting how it took me a year to finally decide how to celebrate my 40th. I suppose "Loving What Is" seems like an appropriate theme for this milestone.

For some, birthdays are not eventful and for some others, better left forgotton. A little history of my first 39 birthdays.... they always began at the crack of dawn, with family calling and singing "Happy Birthday," and presents mounted on a still waking body as lights turn on and birthday cheers wake me up. Parties as a child, sleepovers as a teenager and special shopping trips to San Francisco with my Dad as a young adult, "Exactly what I've wanted!" from my husband, and the sweetest, most creative homemade cards and gifts from my children- all made my years memorable. Could a girl possibly ask for more? Well, maybe. Needless to say, my expectations have run high on my birthday and with my 'Queen for a day' attitude I admit submitting lists in previous years, of all the things I would LOVE on my birthday. Spoiled? Some might think so.....but I know BLESSED is the better word.

Something was different as 40 approached but I couldn't name it. Something new was taking up residence in me that was leaving me a little baffled. I was in no man's land without a plan and without desire for a specific THING! Did I want a big bash like my friend Angela had, complete with dancing until 2am and renting the Green Energy Bus to drive us around and tons of fun- she was willing to put one together for me! At her birthday, I was the one who wanted to bring the party to my house after the nightclub. Appealing, yes, but I wasn't feeling it. What about my sweet husband's suggestion that we invite some of my closest friends and he could have a nice evening catered for me? Very sweet, but again- that didn't call to me either. Dinner with parents and family? That is our usual protocol, and although wonderful, complete with lots of beautiful and thoughtful gifts, I couldn't put my finger on this elusive feeling. Friends had talked a lot about reaching forty, some were sad, happy, others felt liberated, some felt older, younger, healthier and not healthy at all. Some have bought themselves expensive and beautiful things, others have given away much more. Now some might think, so? So you couldn't think of anything, so what? It is just a regular day anyway, we make entirely too much of this. Others might think- GIVE- that will make you feel better. I did feel good already, life has been generous and continues to be. So on my 40th, we ordered pizza and rented a movie with our kids. Typical Friday night stuff and I LOVED it. I didn't feel deprived, or 'un-special,' or forgotten. Weird.

So on this 41st this is what I came to. There will always be a long list of wants for me, but they sit somewhere outside my heart. They are a constant....just when I think, wow! I have so much, how could I possible want more? The Universe expands, and I do (want more). So what was this not wanting on my 40th? What was THAT all about? Who was this alien visitor in these here parts in the land of plenty and wanting more? It turns out her name is Peace and she's staying with me now. She'd visited before but left when WANTING muscled in with all it's NEEDINESS and took up all the space. Apparently Peace settled in this past year as I've stilled myself long enough to feel her presence. I told her to lock herself in please and throw away the key. Oh, and GRATEFUL is shacking up with her too :)- a scandal in the making.

I am proud and happy to announce the launching of my new line of stamps based on my Reclaiming Yin© Artwork Series. You will find them on my website now! The creation of this body of work is dear to my heart as it is representative of my personal journey of reclaiming a more balanced way of living- excavating the yin within and giving it space to flower.

Before the stamps arrived I had never actually used one but since their arrival I see that an annex will have to be created off my studio to accomodate the gorgeous new papers and possibilities that await my discovery. We'll see how my husband weighs in on the remodeling project in my mind :).

Finding Brain Coral and other tidbits

It is amazing to me that it has been three months since my last entry. I am "Loving What Is," borrowing Byron Katie's title of her influential book. Have you read it? I am loving that my blog called to me tonight (and not a moment sooner) on the eve of the day 'work' (aka. 'FUN') begins, as my self-gifted vacation comes to a close. I have spent the last four weeks blissfully filling myself up with inspiration, spending time with family and friends, relishing long walks on the Mexican Riviera (see glorious color above- near Playa del Carmen) while picking up bits of Brain coral along the white sand, reading, reading and reading everything from French Art and Interior Design magazines I can barely understand to Byron Katie's books that are changing the way I DON'T think, to reading the messages this Universe sends me in my stillness.

I completed the next art project I will be teaching for Joggles.com for their online classes. Ok, so the four blissful weeks did contain a little work/FUN, I won't lie, but when I see work/fun as the fun it is, it is hard to put it on hold completely. Anyway, the last online class in Telamadera Fusion was a huge success! I loved connecting with all of you who attended and shared your beautiful creations with me. The next class will begin November 18th- we will create a Yin/Yang Box complete with journals and magnets. A little preview for you on the right :). Today while surfing my favorite do-it-yourself channels, at 3pm the tv changed the channel automatically to Oprah. Not one to think this kind of occurence odd, I simply assumed Fate was pointing me toward this particular show I had seen already months ago where Elizabeth Gilbert (she wrote the brilliant, Eat, Pray, Love) was Oprah's guest. I'm all over the place right now, but hopefully you're following...a week ago on the Yin side of my Yin/Yang box, I wrote the words, "Be still and know." I heard these words on the show today and I knew I was pointing in the direction I needed to be. I'm reminded that life will speak and gift us with all we need if we can just BE, for a little while anyway. Of course my husband explained why the channel skipped over without my pressing any buttons- something about how I had probably inadvertently programmed it when surfing channels earlier. A Left-brained, logical answer, but I'll stick with my explanation- more mystically mysterious.....you know what I mean?

I sent off the first fifteen projects to North Light Books and I'm thrilled to get going on the next 15. Between doing very little these past four weeks, some rays of light have graciously illuminated the right side of my brain so some preliminary sketches have been drawn. I also managed to clean out the studio of stuff blocking precious energy so I'm ready to go! The promised samples of my new rubber stamps will be on the blog this week and for now I will be taking orders via e-mail until the paypal account is set-up. I'm excited to share the "Reclaiming Yin" series with you and would love to see what these stamps inspire in you to create.

My dreams have been very vivid the last couple of weeks. I'm a little surprised as I usually don't experience dreams I remember clearly until closer to Winter. Anyway, last night's took place at UCLA where I went to school. It was a lovely dream where I saw the old buildings along with new ones I've never seen and wonder if they really exist. I went to pick up the schedule of classes, like the catalog, and on the first page it had a few classes that I was taking but the rest of the catalog was blank. I loved being in the store where all the supplies were, I loved feeling like I fit in even though I'm almost twenty years older than most that attend and I loved that my whole family was living there on campus with me. My son was riding his bike along side me as we went to find the catalog. Isn't that funny? Anyway, the peace and happiness I felt upon awakening was a THING, you know? Like a solid, I could have held it and tossed it to you, it was that dense. I woke up KNOWING I am meant to share what I know, that I'm here to fill in the rest of the schedule, fill myself up with joy and help expand this amazing curriculum that is life.

New Book, TV and More Exciting News!

In the past month and a half I have been diligently working on a new book due out next year that will be published by North Light Books. I am extremely excited to be able to share fun projects and ideas with everyone. I'll keep you posted as to when it will be out!

On Friday, May 9th, KC Cowan, Tom and Bill from OPB came to Sisters to interview me for their show, Oregon Artbeat for television. As you can imagine, the days leading up were nutty...lots of cleaning, painting walls, making pillows. I restrained myself from ripping out carpet. These three individuals were so much fun to be with and made me feel very comfortable. They filmed me shopping at my favorite fabric store, The Stitchin' Post here in Sisters and then here at my studio and house. I've never had a tv experience so it was interesting to see the process. They have a wonderful program and I recommend checking out some videos on Oregon Artbeat on the their website, opb.org. There are many talented artists out there making incredible and beautiful work.

Here is an image of my latest work, "Be the Light." It is a small preview, but a better image will be on my website within the next week. I'm proud of this piece as it is my largest Telamadera Fusion to date and managed to keep all the layers (six!) flat!

More exciting news...I created a line of rubber stamps of several of my images. You will be able to order them directly from my website. I'm working on samples for you all to see very soon.

Gearing up to Teach!

We are very excited to be moving our gallery, The Way We Art, to the Sisters Art Works building where we will have the space to teach lots of classes. I'm putting together a Fabric Collage Class, where I'll demonstrate making cards and a no-sew mini quilt during a Saturday in April. I'm excited and hope I receive lots of interest! One of my partners and good friend, Tricia Biesmann already taught a Felt-a-Bowl workshop that was a success! We are very proud of her.

I am thinking of offering a Telamadera Fusion technique On-line class. I'm in the planning stages right now but was hoping to receive some input from all of you out there who might be interested. What I'm thinking is .....offering a four week session where I am available via e-mail to answer your questions during two hours, two days during the week. Participants would receive detailed how-to instructions, a detailed supply list and my support during the four weeks. The cost would be $80.- for the four week session. I'm eager to hear if this interests anyone!

I have much to share! I'd like to say I've been sitting by a pool in the sun, hanging out with my friends.......but wait, I have! Please see the CHA news for more on that. First things first.......The March/April issue for Cloth, Paper, Scissors (#17) has been published. I am so happy to to have my process shared with you all in this beautiful publication. Since I have been reading Cloth, Paper, Scissors and Quilting Arts Magazines it has been a dream for me to see my work in their pages. I am honored and excited!

I am a partner in a gallery here in Sisters called, The Way We Art. Tricia Biesmann (PB Designs) and Lucinda Summerfield (Denim and Silk) and I are proud to include Katie Estvold (Sparrow's Cottage) as our new partner. Katie is a multi-talented artist and wonderful friend. She not only designs beautiful websites (check mine out :)), but she is a gifted artist who is passionate and an expert on history, particularly women's history during the 18th century. She is currently creating inspired Stationary Boxes that you'll just love. Check out her website! We all had the opportunity to recently attend CHA, the Craft and Hobby Association's tradeshow in Anaheim, California.

Yes, we enjoyed some pool side delights but only after we had spent countless hours enjoying and absorbing all there was to see and do. We heard two sensational speakers, Suze Orman, financial expert extraordinaire and Jack Canfield who wrote the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and is a fantastic motivational speaker. Jack, you changed my life! The whole experience was magical as we made some important business connections and met some wonderful people. I finally had the privilege of meeting Sherrill Kahn with Impress Me rubber stamps. She was at the Jacquard booth impressing all of us with her talent and enthusiasm. Sherrill is who encouraged me to write my Telamadera Fusion process in Cloth, Paper, Scissors and has convinced me to create rubber stamps of my designs. I met another wonderful soul, Carol Murphy (altered by design and joggles.com ) who shared her ideas and work with me too. I am happy to have made a new friend.

Now back in sleepy, snowy Sisters, Oregon, I am working on a few projects. I can hardly wait for you to see "Be the Light," my largest Telamadera Fusion artwork to date. It measures four feet by four feet. I recently met a gifted woodworker who will be creating my wood substrates for me as well as my mirrors. I am so grateful to have found someone local to help me. OH! I finished painting my studio too. Yes, those are the pics above. Jamaican Blue and Buttercream on the walls make my heart sing. I love it!

Basketball season is over for the kids, and not a moment too soon. Did I just say that? No, I love sitting on wood bleachers for four hours on Saturdays and for four hours on Sundays! I even kept some splinters just to remind me how fun that part of the experience was :). Truly, it was a delight watching my beautiful children improve and have a blast with their teammates. Mike and I are gearing up for Lacrosse and Track and Field next. Let's hope it stops snowing!

The day started with a visit from my wonderful friend Nancy, my roommate from college.....we've made lots of memories in the over twenty years of our friendship. There have been lots of miles, four kids, husbands and busy lives between us and you know what is so great? We can still sit and talk for hours. We can take each other back one moment and then soar right into sharing our dreams, the next. Not so much has changed in these twenty years, but then really everything has, too.

I love how Katie has taken her love of history and her appreciation of the lives of women in the 18th and 19th centuries and has created an aritistic expression that is so unique. Her passion speaks to us through her multilayered canvases, her dolls, stationary, her words......she invites us into a world so many of us know so little about, teaching us that we can all live with authenticity, joy and creativity with the stirrings of our soul. We just need to take the first step in honoring our unique expression.

I'm elated...just posted my first image! Thank you Katie for your help! It seems the photos I tried previously were too large. This was the sunset we saw our last night on Maui a week and a half ago. It was about 75 degrees, with a little breeze. Mike wanted to bring the torches home. We'll try to re-create something for him here in the snow :).

This is my first post on my new blog.....I'm a little nervous, but excited to venture out into uncharted territory. I decided to take a walk in the forest at the edge of my neighborhood in my pajamas this morning. I'd never done that before - a walk in my pajamas. I guess it is a day of 'firsts' for me. I returned to my studio to work on a commissioned artwork that a friend asked me to create. As soon as I've completed it I'll show you an image.
